Paul Rand on Innovation

Innovation does not always, or even necessarily, imply dramatic change. Design is innovative even if it is merely interpret in an unexpected way. Innovative solutions are more the product of restraints than of freedoms—of cultural limitations, scarcity of funds and materials, production capabilities, and demand of the marketplace.

Innovation is the enemy of trendiness, pretense, and timidity. It recognizes the genuine from the spurious. It tantalizes the viewer, stimulates the mind, intensifies meaning, generates interest, and is at the heart of both design and better business.

Design, Form, Chaos.

Jasper Morrison - Super Normal

The motivations of designers are an important consideration in the development of good objects. Jasper Morrison believes that good objects don’t always result from wanting to be noticed. He reminds designers of their responsibility to fill environments with interesting, useful and normal things.
